GAF has made available its Cobra IntakePro Rooftop Intake Vent, which promotes energy efficiency and helps guard against roof system rot, ice damming and mildew growth. It can also improve attic ventilation airflow by up to 20 percent when installed with existing soffit/undereave vents in a properly balanced ventilation system (based on GAF ASHRAE airflow testing at 5-mph wind speed). The vent, which rolls out and fastens with included 1 3/4-inch coil nails, is fully tested to withstand wind-driven rain, snow and ice-dam infiltration (under controlled GAF laboratory testing).
Roof specifiers and installers can now achieve project goals in fire resistance and solar reflectance more easily with CertainTeed Presidio Metal Roofing, according to the latest editions of industry performance test standards. Introduced last year, the line of steel roofing products blends the look of classic roofing materials with the exceptional wind/hail resistance and solar reflectance of metal roofing.
New fire rating requirements issued for Class A and B fire ratings by UL 790, the industry standard for fire-resistant roofing, make it easier for building professionals to achieve higher fire ratings with Presidio. Specifiers now can achieve Class A fire rating with Presidio by using a fire resistant rated rolled roofing underlayment as the bottom layer placed over roof sheathing—a structural panel is no longer needed. Further, the metal roofing products now earn a Class B fire rating when paired with any standard CertainTeed roofing underlayment.
In regards to solar reflectance, seven colors from the Presidio roofing product line have recently been approved for compliance with California Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) standards: Presidio Tile colors English Toffee, Nutmeg, Speckled Bronze and Terra Cotta, and Presidio Shake colors Ash, Sand Dune and Weathered Wood. Each of these products received a “Best” rating in CRCC’s good-better-best tier system, with solar reflectance ratings ranging from 0.26 to 0.34.
“Sustainability and providing customers with products that help ensure the safety of homeowners have long been top priorities at CertainTeed,” says Dale Walton, residential products manager for CertainTeed Roofing. “And, the recent reports from UL and the CRCC serve as proof of this commitment. With Presidio, specifiers and contractors will have the peace of mind to install the highest quality energy-efficient, fire-and weather-resistant roof, all while more easily meeting project certification goals.”
Each easy to install Presidio panel has overlaps that conceal the joints and create a seamless appearance. Presidio Tile embodies the same Mediterranean magnetism of traditional clay, but weighs hundreds of pounds less, and at a fraction of the cost. Presidio Shake is pre-weathered, aged and distressed to recreate the look of wood. Lastly, Presidio Slate showcases the natural beauty of stone in a lightweight, fully recyclable, energy-efficient material.
Have you ever been to a track or a playground that was springy? It may have had a characteristically black material but it looked almost like asphalt? Then you have already experienced the idea of rubberized materials.
At one time there was a severe and understandable concern about tire waste. It was unmanageable and a growing problem. Burning them gave off noxious gasses. The alternative was to throw them in a landfill. Instead, engineers found ways to recycle the material for many other uses. One of the resulting products is Euroshield Rubber Roofing. It is environmentally smart and easily protects the home against all that nature can throw its way.
Cedar and wood are charming. People love to adorn the top of a plaster cottage with quaint cedar shake roofing. Or, the siding of a home with wood. The problem is that wood loves to absorb water, and rots very easily when set outside. It impacts the ability of the home’s building envelope in a drastic and negative way. Wood requires sanding and painting every couple of years. It is labor intensive, expensive, not environmentally friendly, and is not the best material for a home.
Euroshield rubber shingles are capable of replicating the look of slate, and wood. The rubber shingles are relatively the same heft as a traditional asphalt shingle. Slate can crack and does not hold up well to excess weight. Shingles have their drawbacks as well.
Rubber is superior. It is a long-lasting material that holds up well to nature. It is a material that is fit for new buildings and re-roofing alike. The great part is that homeowners can realize a superior roofing material for less than it would cost to install metal or cedar. It will cost more than asphalt, but that is not all bad news. They have come down in price in the 16 years that they have been on the market. In addition, they have become a leaner and meaner product poised to take over. They come in brown, black, and gray, much like traditional asphalt shingles.
It turns out that the combination of more than 95 percent recycled tires is effective as roofing material. They source anywhere from 250 to 1,000 used rubber tires to make a roof. Consider tires for your next roof. It is durable and made from 95 percent recycled tires.

The roof is definitely one of the most vital surfaces found in a house. It is at times more important than the exterior walls. Since it is the part of the house that is most exposed, it has a great job to do. Due to its position, it is under constant assault from rain and the sun and in case the roof leaks, you may end up losing lots of money to repairs from issues like water damage. However, this is the part of the home that most people do not think about till they are faced with a rainstorm, blizzard or hailstorm.
For a consumer, making the choice between metal roofing and shingles can be a real dilemma. There are many discrepancies in taste, even in builders and architects. Most of these opinions though are due to individual agendas. Most buyers care about the price and will not think twice about the material so long as the roof is functioning properly. If you are having trouble choosing between these two you can put the following tips to mind.
There are several reasons why you may choose shingles over metal roofing. One of these reasons is that they are economical. Its low cost may be one of its greatest selling points. Adding this to the fact that asphalt shingles have been accepted and proven to be a material that builders trust.
In addition, asphalt shingles are easy to work with. No other roofing material is as easy as asphalt shingles to install. Due to its ease of installation, it may even take just one day for a professional contractor to install the shingles. In some cases, you can do it yourself, but we don’t ever recommend this if you don’t have experience. It can be really dangerous. It is also very easy to repair in case it gets damaged.
As with all products, asphalt shingles have their drawbacks too. They tend to not hold up very well when it comes to severe weather conditions for instance hailstorms, so make sure you hire a professional you can trust who gets the proper shingles that last long. They are also quite heavy.
Metal roofing on the other hand is advantageous for a number of reasons, the first of these being its light weight. It is just about the lightest material that you can install on your roof. The metal also offers great resistance to severe weather. Some zinc and copper metal roofing have lasted over a century long.
Metal is also quite great in prevention of leaks, having good wind resistance and being fireproof. In addition, it is environmentally friendly. They are some of the most energy efficient roofing materials. During the cold season, metal roofs reflect heat thus retaining warmth in homes.
One of the most consistent drawback of metal roof is its cost. Though over time the price has gone down, it is still much more expensive than asphalt. Some metals like copper and zinc are pricier making them quite expensive. Their performance can also be compromised by the daily atmosphere conditions. Metals tend to contract and expand extensively and this might affect their long term performance if you are living in a place that experiences alternating hot and cold weather.
